About Byron Van Pelt
Hi - Byron here.
I know all too well how frustrating, overwhelming, and exhausting it can be trying to build a profitable business that's either not getting off the ground or thoroughly draining your energy (or both).
I started my coaching career eight years ago. From the very beginning, I was yearning for clients. And yet, the funny thing is, when I finally started getting them, I wished they would go away. They would incessantly complain, flake out on sessions, and rarely expressed gratitude for our work together. In the worst cases, they made me feel guilty for pricing my services the way I did.
I was completely unsure of the value I provided to others - constantly changing my description for what I did for a living, trying to create that magic recipe that made my clients go "wow - I need to hire you!" But I couldn't find it - and so I had to beg, convince, and strong sell people to keep things going.
After doing this for the better half of a decade, I was completely burned out. Physically, mentally, spiritually. I was energetically bankrupt. I had gone through so many marketing and sales programs, so many coaches, so many gurus...and yet I still wasn't anywhere close to where I knew I needed to be. So much work put into myself...and so little to show for it.
At one point, I decided to just give up on coaching. I was hearing more and more about internet marketing - and thought the answers were all in automation and content creation. "If I could just create a course and sell it to a thousand people..." I believed I was about to set myself free. But in reality, I was just building an even bigger prison.
The deeper I got into selling my products, the further away I got from my intuition. I blindly followed the "flavor of the month" tactics for growing traffic, converting sales, and gaining market share. My soul was craving a deeper connection to my customers; I knew I wasn't meant to serve them. But all I could see was the money and the allure of freedom. And this allure kept me at my computer for sometimes sixteen hours a day. (Thank God this was before my daughter was born. My wife would have shot me and buried me in the backyard).
One day a good friend of mine called me to catch up. And she began explaining how she had landed her first big ticket client with no website, no pushy sales process, and just a few simple conversations. I thought she was either full of shit or had discovered the Holy Grail of business strategies. I was really hoping for the latter.
When I picked her brain and asked her how she pulled it off, she started using language I had never heard before in business: congruence, alignment, claim. And then she really blew my mind when she said, "People aren't buying from you because of what you know. People buy from you based on who you are."
Immediately I had to face that I had no right to bitch about my whiny, low-paying clients. They were simply a reflection of who I was. In fact, every aspect of my coaching business was a perfect reflection of how I had been showing up as a human being. The exact degree to which I allowed my clients to see my vulnerability and connect to my soul was a precise representation of how little I was being paid.
So I ended up hiring some of her mentors - and they played a massive role in guiding me to shift from mind to spirit. Like my friend, I too learned how to enroll high ticket clients with no website or online presence. I had a $25,000 month soon after - and my life started looking very different.
I've learned the key to growing a profitable coaching or consulting business doesn't boil down to simply tools and strategies. If we're too focused on the practicality of building momentum, we lose touch with why people really hire us in the first place. And at the same time, if we ignore the practical tools and strategies that are effective, it's very easy to get our head lost in the clouds.
I believe marrying the spirituality of who we are and why we're executing our purpose with the functionality of systems and tools is where we can really shine. This synthesis of mind and spirit allows us to stand out and make a considerable dent in the universe.
My biggest mission is to awaken those who are burned out, frustrated, and overwhelmed at the prospects of growing their business. I want to show them there is a better way - a faster, more powerful way to scale - and it can be the greatest source of joy in our lives.
Wishing you all the best,
